Growth Plate Injury Empty Growth Plate Injury

Post by soccer00g 15/08/12, 06:47 am

My daughter was recently experiencing pain in her hips/legs and the orthopedic advised us yesterday that she has an inflamed growth plate, more than likely from over use. She is out of all activity for a minimum of a month. Anybody have any insight and or experience with healing this kind of injury? Season starts in two weeks which she will miss, I am getting heavy push back from her however I cannot afford for her to injure herself further and complicate what not only was painful but could cause a long term issue. We have stretches and some anti-inflammatory medication while to assist in healing which the doctor said only comes with rest?

One of my DD's former teammates went through this. It sounds like you got the same advice--and it worked for her. A lot of rest and a little PT/stretching resolved it over time. Unfortunately, I don't think there's a short cut. While missing a few weeks of season is disappointing, the long-term effects of reinjuring it may be worse.

It's just soccer. She takes off a few months and fully recovers. Sounds ideal to me. There will still be plenty of games when she starts again, and probably someone else on the sideline with an overuse injury just waiting to be replaced.

We had a similiar injury, occurred from a player kicking the side of her knee and bruising the growth plate in the knee, she sat out a month and was 100% recovered.

I would without a second thought, sit out the month to allow it to heal.

We iced it too early on, that seemed to help as well.

My non-soccer daughter had a similar injury a year and half ago. both hip flexors not growth plate but also due to over use. We waited much too long to take her to the ortho and she continued to do all her activities (dance, cheer, middle school athletics)... and ended up being out of EVERYTHING for 12 full weeks.

Our neighbor is now going thru the same thing with her hips, resting just enough to feel better but not heal. Tries to practice and ends up hurting and needing to take another week or 2 off. She been struggling all summer.

So.. Follow dr orders and take the month off. Go to all practices, games to support and remain part of the team. You and your DD will be happy you did in the end. Also, continue to do the stretches, even after she is released to practice again. Most girls, team, etc really do not do adequate stretching!!!!
