IF you have personally had a kid play for the school team can you let me know the pros and cons.... I would rather think about it in advance then guide my DD's decision in an un-informed way.

Thanks!

I suppose it may differ from one ISD to another. My older daughter played middle school soccer through Richardson and had a great time. The season is very brief at 6-7 weeks, so it doesn't interfere much with other activities. I believe they practiced daily during the short season right after school and the games occurred once a week on Thursday evenings. A team could win district and then bi-district, but that was as far as it went.

Soccer in RISD is technically a "no cut" sport, but the coaches play the better players for most of the games. Many people might say that there is more injury risk playing against unskilled opponents. I disagree. It's hard to top the level of smash-mouth soccer you see regularly in select games. Kids weren't regularly being hauled out of games on stretchers in middle school matches.

My dd has been looking forward to playing on the school team since 5th grade. We watched several of the games this year, not very pretty soccer but it was a lot less physical than any of her LH games. Her school plays winter season so most of the school games are during the LH break. It is more for fun to play with her friends at school.

It's fun for your kid, and she can get to be the star in front of her friends. Definitely bad soccer, but it is fun to sit around and watch the other parents get all worked up over it. Watch them clap wildly when someone just kicks the ball as far as they can to nobody.

My DD just completed 8th grade soccer in LISD. She really enjoyed. The level of play varies from team to team. Mostly the soccer is not bad. There where cuts at her school not sure of others. Her team was made up almost entirely of club players (lhgcl and plano) while most others looked to have fewer. It can get rough but generally not more than club games. They seemed to like playing in front of classmates and at least in the 8th grade the boys often show up.

My dd has not played but I work in the schools and have seen plenty of games. Our school in Frisco makes cuts because we have so many try out. Generally, we get 4-5 current club players and a handful that played club at one time. We also get a few kids who have never played soccer but are athletic. The girls all like being part of the team and the coaches try to at least tolerate club conflicts. At our school, the team sits together at lunch on game days, which the girls seem to like. It is definitely an opportunity for the girls who play club to shine in front of their school friends.

My DD just finished up her middle school season and had a blast. Like others have said it is not pretty soccer, but she loved getting the chance to show off in front of her friends. It is a pretty short season and definitely not as physical as LHGCL. Definitely more pro's then con's for us!

It depends on the school district and how many select players play on the school soccer team as to what kind of experience you will have I have heard. They cut soccer from our middle school last year but will be bringing it back next year. Including my DD, there are 9 select soccer players who are planning to sign up if they do bring it back.

Interesting what school are you referring to?  I can not imagine being able to know the number of girls planning on signing up at my DD's school for next year already....
