I have seen those too...another issue is DGD

Delusional Grandparents Disorder -- how many times do the parents, etc believe their grandchildren are also better than anyone else on the team, even if the parent believes they are a quality young athlete, they believe they are better than that.

Lol! That's a grandparent's job, to think their GK's are the best and spoil them.

Soccer Dad, I would think any parent would be happy to have a grandparent involved in their grandchild. Some grandparents actually take on the responsibilities of paying for soccer, taking the players to practice and games, supporting the teams, etc. And even if they only go to support their grandchild at games, that is more than some parents do.

I have seen many players whose parents don't/can't make it to games, practice, etc. So if they have grandparent pride for their granddaughters, I think it is fine. I have seen far worse parents than grandparents.

Of course, you know that I am speaking from experience of the non-parental variety. However, my exception is that I love my DGD and while I know her strengths, I also know what her lesser abilities are. We talk about it before and after games. I cheer for her (loudly) as well as the other players on the team. I take that responsibility very seriously. Very Happy

My GDD started playing at the age of 4. Since that time, I have missed only four games. Children need to know that they are appreciated, and supported.

Providing that is never wrong. Now, as to those parents and grandparents who yell at their players to take a girl out from the sidelines, or applaud vicious play, that I do have issues with just as I do when a coach says it (and I hear these types of comments almost every week).

If you need some grandmotherly support for your DD, just look me up and I will be glad to hang out at your game (as long as it isn't against my DGD). Razz

I have heard a few grandparents think their DGD or DGS are the next Mia or Clint, but one thing is for sure:

They cheer, not coach, but cheer for their grandchildren very loudly, as well as usually, the entire team. A+ there

I am proud to say that I absolutely have GPD! I have 2 GDD and both are, of course, the best players on their respective teams--feel free to ask me at any time. As my DD is a single Mom and does not have allot of free time (but does make every game), we do take one of my GDD to team practices, keeper training and we also have missed very few games or tournaments since starting soccer. It's great fun!!!!!! We are able to watch the practices and we feel we have a great rapor with all the girls. We support the team and cheer for everyone. Isn't that what a grandparent does? I am like InaB though and have a hard time with parents who are negative or encourage vicious play. We saw that last weekend at one of my GDDs games. What does that teach the girls?

Isn't it great when you cheer loudly for a really good play and the girl looks over at you with a beaming smile....gotta love it! So let's get some more GPD at the games!!!

Being a Grandparent allows you to make up for all the stuff we screwed up as a parent!! The best thing is to sit back and enjoy the ride - because we all know now how fast the time flies!! BTW - my granddaughter is the best !!

So basically, parents make up where they messed up as a youth, and grandparents make up where they screwed up as parents.

Ah, if only childhood and parenthood came with instructions and redact opportunities.

I would say so. I have told my dd's that for me, at the end of the season, the ball went away until next year when season started again. Had I practiced in off season I would have been much better.... off course there is no off season with soccer in NTX.
