Plus, do coaches have all that much to do with individual player development anyway???..trainers and the players' own initiative probably have more impact.

I agree. There is no magic formula. Sometimes even the players that spend the countless hours training and are anointed the next great one do not make it.4-3-3 wrote:The fit between a kid and coach has so many variables, which often change over time, any universal coach rating is damn near meaningless.

Coaches have everything to do with development. My sophomore has probably doubled her skill level and ability in the past year since joining her current coach. The coach is "old school" and focused on conditioning and commitment (own initiative as outlined by Guest) and teaches the technical/tactical portion in great detail. He doesn't "market" or "sell" during practice and focuses completely on what is happening. My kid had a couple of decent coaches prior to this one and they were ok, but a coach that always teaches, provides feedback, applies rewards/consequences and is consistent has been key. I have also noticed the changes in many of her teammates as well as someone has to be surrounded by great players in order to get better. Hint: one doesn't have to pay $3,500 per year either in order to get a great coach.

There are plenty of great coaches that fit that description. But there are also plenty of coaches who are decent coaches. It's all about finding one that will motivate and challenge the girls to continue to get better and also provide the environment for that to happen. Of course, with them now in High School, the time for finding select coaches is coming to an end for most of them. The next phase, college, will be more emphasis on results, than development and we will all lose that 4-6 week period in May and June to get familiar with a team and coach before deciding.
