Using ice ammonia water to stay cool Empty Using ice ammonia water to stay cool

Post by mommabear1 28/06/13, 09:22 pm

My dd's last team used to use rags kept in a small cooler of icy water and Ammonia Spirits for the girls to wipe themselves down with during really hot tournaments. She has a tourney tomorrow and asked me if I'd make some of those "funny smelling rags". I wondered if anyone knew if this was safe? I let her use and it seemed to really help but I was a little concerned about making it myself and liability of allowing her team mates to use it...I hate to do something I THINK is helping but isn't actually safe. Anyone have any experiences with this??

I found these instructions on the internet-

Ingredients for ammonia water and use:

2oz. bottle of
"Spirits of Ammonia"
(at your local drugstore)
Actually it's Aromatic Ammonia Spirit U.S.P.
3 bottles make 4 gallons
1 gal. plastic bucket (some use a playmate type cooler).
About 4-7 washcloths.

Fill bucket 1/2 full of ice, pour 3/4 bottle of "spirits of ammonia" into bucket for each gallon, fill the rest of bucket with water and mix. Place washcloths into bucket and stir around a couple of times. When player comes off field and into dugout area, pick up washcloth, wring out excess and wipe down arms, face (DON'T suck on washcloth), neck (front and back), shoulders, chest, etc. It really is effective while held on back of neck. And please don't inhale to a great degree, only mildly. Next day, team will be asking for it.

If players are young, coaches should help them.
Please don't let them DRINK it!!!!

Thanks scratch

I found this article...

I guess that ammonia water was used because ammonia evaporates quickly, and evaporation cools the skin. But it might also burn the eyes. Alcohol rubs were given in the hospitals to reduce fevers for the same evaporation reason also. They used isopropyl or denatured alcohol for that. I wonder if alcohol water would work?

Actually, my DD uses frog togs - those rubber-like towels you can find at Academy and other sports stores. You wet them and place them in icy water in a container. You pull them out and wring the excess water off and place it around the neck or head. When it warms up a little take it off and give it a good shake and use it again. Then just put it back into the ice water.
