From my understanding, all you pay for is the travel to the ID2 camp. Also, heard that it is great experience for the girls.

I know our close friends boy base been involved for 3yrs and they love it. The exposure and experiences have been well organized and managed. Yes, it is money, travel etc, but noting which is unreasonable base an all the travel from their club travel costs.

Hook It, surely your close friend's boy is either not involved with ID2 program or they did not give you accurate info.

My dd was called to ID2 National Camps twice, and was able to attend once. Missed another one due to some conflicts.

Camps are held all over the national, and they are usually held quarterly. The last one just concluded last weekend in Portland.

In terms of costs, the only cost the parents incur is travel (air or otherwise) to the camp and back. The Club incurs zero costs.
Once at the camp, the participants are provided with everything for the whole duration of stay including balls and uniforms (shirts, shorts, socks), bags, at no cost at all.....FREE.  And they get to keep it all.  Indeed, in their instructions, the only items they are asked to bring is shinguards, cleats and running shoes.  They also stay at very fancy hotels......at least in my dd's case they did.

Now, I am not sure how they do it on the boy's side, but I don't understand how can one be involved for "3 years".  As the name indicates, ID2 is meant to Identify and Develop players who are then pushed into the National Youth Teams system.  ID2 is run as camps and participation is strictly by invitation only from USSC and US Soccer Federation staff.  Clubs have no say in it and there is no tryouts.

Clubs do have some say in ID2. Its the Club coach that recommends his/her players. Scouts are then sent out to watch the players in their own environment. Based on their performance they are then asked into ID2 camp. I do agree with the other aspects Pele mentioned.

Its a GREAT experience. .....If your child is lucky enough to attend ... and... you have the means. I would HIGHLY recommend parents attend. It gives you great perspective on how your kids talent stacks up against players from across the country.
