My friends 99 coach has said he will roster 22 for the upcoming LHGCL season. Is this too many? Is this the norm? What is a right number for 99,98,97 girls?

Do they do this so they can scrimmage each other or is this purely a money move?

Our Coach looks to roster 16+/-1 committed players. Every player gets plenty of game time. It is not a money deal for this team.

High school and life starts to get in the way at the older ages. And injuries also. So 22 is the norm from what I hear.

None of my 3 ever played on a LHGCL team with more than 18.

Completely agree. It's a big waste of time for all if you don't use them. Well of course except for the money thing for the club and coach.

He better use all 22 of them.

This is normal with that age group and above. My son '95 team started with 22 and by mid-season they were only suiting up 16 due to injuries and cards.

I'll agree with Seven, roster numbers tend to go up with older teams as injuries and life happen, although, my experience has seen closer to 18 for club, but closer to 22 for school teams.

You asked:
Is your team looking for players?

Thanks for your question: Short answer is yes. see why below.

Long answer: Last year we started with 17 players (2 of them were new competitive players but good raw talent).  We started out very strong in PPL D1 and won that fall’s championship.  The two first timers left at the end of that season due to commitment challenges. The spring season was not as strong. We seemed to have lost some focus and commitment.  But we started to come back play like we did in the fall season.  Our coach at the end of league play gave a big speech about what does commitment look like and why it is important, not just for soccer but life experiences and opportunities. (She played in national championship while in select and won a championship while in college-she was team captain).  We did well in our post tournament; beat some higher competitive teams, etc.  So, why such a long answer?   The speech worked,  we lost 3 players but not to soccer.  All of them wanted to come back, but 2 of them are 4.0 GPA students with college courses, etc. One of them also was a good BB player.  All three will get scholarship money for their talents, no doubt.  So the expectation is there.   So, we have some good spots open for committed players.  We are looking for a total of 16+/-1 committed players.

Thanks for asking.

22 is too many.

Our soccer players are very committed and all want to play.

But some teams take many players, 22, do they develop all 22?
I guess some teams don't care who shows up for practice or games with 22 you know you will have plenty. What if they all showed up?? and you sat the bench and you paid $3000.00 and there were three girls starting and playing and you heard they were free...yeah...they didn't pay a thing to play.$0. Would you be upset?  Parents think about it. Please go to a team your player will play and not sit the bench.

There are many good teams and good coaches out there, that really care about the players learning and developing.

The older the more injuries, conflicts and girls quit. Some will take a couple of developmental players and they will likely get less play time but an opportunity to improve and become a more rounded viable option at the higher level. If in question about where your dd stands just ask before signing. If your moving from a much lower division to a much higher, such maybe the case.

16 at younger ages and 18-20 at the older ages.

We have had our kids on both types of teams:
. Everyone plays / development
. Meritocracy / earn your playing time thorough game effectiveness

It is important to understand the difference and make sure you and your DD are on the same page.  In our case we tend to lean towards the latter rather than the former as everyone seems to focus more.  We have been burned by lack of accountability and effort if everyone shows up to the game knowing they are going to play regardless of their practice effort, game situation or game effectiveness.

Probably what any parent would consider when answering this question and the impact on your kid is where does he/she stand among the 22? If they are among the 1- 14 then fine...but if they are at 15 - 22 than not so much.
