Girls DA in 2017

Appears to be done deal - DA for girls starting 2017. Looks USSF replacing ECNL with DA.

Fail for 2 reasons. 1) It won't be free like the boys 2) USSF/USYS suck at cutting through the bureaucracy to pull off such a league, hence the rise of U.S. Club Soccer's ECNL in the first place.

The only way this works is enhance and support ECNL.

I agree. What does DA provide that ECNL hasn't already built?

1.May not be 100% free like the boys, but surely it will be subsidized in one way or the other.
2. Players(parents) will jockey for position into the league in much the same way they did to ECNL, so the college coaches will follow.
3. The DA will be the clearest path into the USWNT pool, and ECNL will become 2nd tier just as the article suggest.

The real question becomes, which clubs get the DA in NTX?

Current DA for boys in NTX are Texans, FCD and Solar.
I'm gonna guess they will also host 3 clubs on the girls side.

So If DA is top class and ECNL is second class, what does that make LHGCL?

I like how the girls DA implementation date is the same as the mandatory implementation date for the agegroup changes. I suspect this has been a done deal for a long time.

I'm willing to bet that the DA is coming because of the success of ECNL. One thing that will help the DA to kill ECNL will be the price. Parents are paying $10,000+ a year for ECNL. I also agree it will be interesting to see who gets the DA spots. Clubs are already positioning themselves for possible spots..

I wouldn't dismiss them out of hand. I remember when the ECNL began as a showcase only league, they weren't taken all that seriously as competition. LHGCL was considered one of the strongest leagues in the country, and they weren't the least bit threatened. Then when the ECNL added the league play in addition to showcases, things changed. Boy, did things change.

If the DA can successfully market themselves as a TOP level league (i.e. the boys DA), especially if the expenses are subsidized by the clubs or sponsors, or whomever, they will find willing participants, and there will likely be damage to the ECNL that will flow downward. To what extent, who knows?

I don't see a foregone conclusion that ecnl will be the only 2nd tier. Take the top 30% of ecnl players to DA...add some percentage of non ecnl players who now may get access to the top level, what you have left is very even across ecnl remnants, usys and other us club leagues.

DA will be a closed league. Everything else should be merit based leagues where teams earn their place. If ecnl lives on after DA, their format should change.

If USSF can dictate age pure, and playing formats, and will now run the top league, they should just go full bore and dictate the whole pyramid.

IMO they should lock leaders of usys and us club in a room with boxing gloves and tell them only one can come out still standing. Once you have DA, no need for multiple closed leagues where clubs or admins try to keep hold of their fiefdoms.

Why would solar/fcd/sting, if they have DA, be gone from ecnl?

My understanding is DA is u14, u16, u18...so a vast majority of u13, u15,u17 will need a place to play when they are the younger of the two years.

If whatever 3 clubs didnt have ecnl, then in the off yr, would the top talent go to an ecnl club for a year to play the best talent they can, and then go back to a DA club the following year? Or could a club have both, to keep the off year players in their system. (Basis for thought, most u14s will make da, when, realistically, only a very few of the very top u13s make)

DA u-14 , u-15 u-16 , U-17 u-18 the clubs will have teams in all leagues at all levels example FCD will have a DA team, ECNL team, and a LHGCL lake highlands team. more leagues more players more revenue for the big clubs.

So ECNL will become the league for B teams of DA clubs? The appeal/interest from college coaches wouldn't plummet? Just don't see how that works under the current format. ECNL without the best players would need some means to ensure quality...they'd need to open up access and/or be more proactive in maintaining standards.

There are just too many friggin regional and national leagues already. ECNL, EGSL, USYS Regional and National, various flavors of NPL, EDP...it's incredible so many families with players at so many levels are eating these huge travel costs when equivalent competition can be had locally in most markets. Retaining all of these alphabet soup leagues plus a DA on top doesn't seem an improvement on what we have today. I'd love to see USSF try to fix more than just the top of the pyramid. Even if they don't, the market won't sustain this forever. Eventually something will have to give.

I think the other thing that will have to change is the cost for ECNL. A friend of mine told me a couple years ago that she was paying 10,000 a year for her daughter to be on the Solar Ecnl team. There is no way that the cost can stay that high when it becomes a 2nd tier league. I wonder how this will effect LPFCA and City Fc when it comes to NPL?

1. anyone here ever thought that the ECNL didn't build anything? The ECNL is a copy of the DA structure from the boys, that was started prior to US Club Soccer creating the ECNL as a girls version of the DA. Credit to US Club Soccer for it's entrepreneurial spirit in seeing a gap in the system for a national soccer league for girls, but they took the USSF DA model and copied it for girls. It's not rocket science but it is what it is. When USSF steps in a creates it's league, it'll relegate ECNL to a lower tier and it'll been seen as such. No biggie. I hope they saved up all that cash they were raking in while it lasted....

2. And to say that the ECNL doesn't get any support from USSF isn't exactly true. US Club Soccer created and operates the ECNL as a nationwide league. USSF certified US Club Soccer as a member organization (just like USYS, AYSO, USASA, etc.). Therefore, USSF sanctions the associations, leagues, and members that register & play within US Club Soccer, since they are members of USSF. So the ECNL is a registered league in USSF and any support that USSF gives to US Club Soccer is also support given to ECNL and it's participating members.

3. IMO, this only make soccer more exclusive than ever. The parents that can pay the most money to play in this new league will be the ones that can get onto teams in the Girls DA, further missing more talent that can't afford to pay the high dollars. Again, no different than what youth soccer has been trending towards for the past 20 years anyway.

Yes my belief is that the DA league will be very similar to the ECNL model. The difference between the two will be who receives the invites to the DA. The DA will be a slimmer more trim version of ECNL. The push on the ladies side for club hiarchy in Dallas is being played out right before our eyes. Their are going to be some bruised feelings.
