Approach to "try outs" in Select... Empty Approach to "try outs" in Select...

Post by Distributor 21/04/12, 07:18 am

As we approach the “tryouts/open practices” portion of the select season, I’m seeking some advice for those of us that haven’t gone through this before. I know there’s a “release” that has to be signed by both coaches, and bridges should never be burned (unless intended), but any advice on how the DD should approach the DDs on the teams they are going to practice with? How about the parents approach to the other parents watching practice?
I’m sure it’s a little easier if the DD has friends on the team she’s trying out on, but it’s a little tougher when she doesn’t know anyone.
My guess is that it makes it even tougher when the DD is a goalie, and the team already has a goalie.

Thanks in advance for the advice and discussion.

On the teams my dd has played on, the girls that tryout have always been welcome with open arms by the kids on the team. Just tell her to be herself and kids usually fit right in. As for the keeper part, if both girls want a little field time it is a good situation to have 2 keepers. If the current keeper only wants to play in the goal then I would discuss with the coach before you go out there if he really wants to look at replacing his existing keeper.

Just my thoughts

If you "havent gone through it before", then your DD is either in Rec or Academy, or otherwise not under contract. No release is needed if you have not signed a contract. In fact, you can (should?) practice now as you dont have to wait until June. Many teams will try players out in tournaments in May. Also, if your DD is a GK, keep in mind you may get select scholarship money for that skill, if you play your cards right. Very Happy
