Southlake and Northwest do still have a league. Small, maybe 4 or 5 games.Number07 wrote:Keller ISD, Southhlake and northwest (Coppell, grapevine, Colleyville ??) had a 7/8th grade league for a few years. It was run by the respective high school coaches and not part of the 4 sport middle school athletic program. It has since been cut due to all the budget cuts in this area.

Fort Worth parochial schools have an 8 game season with two divisions, about 9 teams in each division. COED 6th grade thru 8th grade mixed together. Most schools have two or three teams participating, mine had three teams. Some schools stack their A team with all Club boy and girl players. Our school used the pick a name out of a hat method. All schools must split their teams with having similiar make up of grade ages on the team. My first year coaching in it, had a lot of fun, totally different then select both in expectations and skill level, but none-the-less a rewarding experience.
Time on the pitch is always a good time!

Also it is fun for the rec players to play together as it is usually really tough for them once they get to HS to make a team. When you get in HS the Club players will usually be the players that are on the team....and HS has three teams so they will hopefully make one of them.

That is a silly comment

Mansfield ISD does not have soccer in the middle schools and would agree the focus is more on v-ball and b-ball. I do not believe Kennedale or Arlington has middle school soccer either.

Re: Soccer In Middle School???
As for whether select or rec players should play at the middle school age or high school, most schools don't have a choice. What I mean is that the coaches have to pick from the girls they have, and it's likely that many of them won't have enough select-only players to fill a 20+ team roster.
The other shocker - and I know this is blasphemy on a forum like this - is that many of the rec players actually contribute. When 4A JJPearce High School won state twice in a row a few years ago, there were some good rec players and/or girls who had quit select many years earlier that were part of the championship. Speed is speed and athleticism is athleticism.
The lines are blurred these days. Some of the kids I've seen playing in PPL and even LHGC D3 are very... how should I put this... average. There are girls on PSA teams with much more skill. And there are full-blown "select" teams that compete in PSA only (Lonestars 01 girls, Storm FC 01, and several others that train year round including my own). What is select and what is rec anymore? Other than the price?

There's one school in Arlington that has soccer in middle school. Can't remember which. They play against some of the Dallas schools. 4-5 game season.

It's a shame they don't all have it.

I would imagine soccer becomes much less important to girls where middle school soccer is not available because all their friends are practicing/playing b-ball and v-ball. Maybe not but I could see that scenario playing out.

My DD only plays soccer, it's her one true passion. She knows she doesn't want to play the other ones because it could conflict with her soccer. She is in athletics and runs cc and track so she still feels included with the other girls and doesn't feel pressured to play other sports just because her friends do. Now I have seen girls who only played soccer then started playing bball and vball in MS and have seen their desire to play soccer to be less. It's happening to a few girls on our team and would guess that a few may not return because of it. It happens. Not every girl follows the same path.
