And it's not a diamond in the rough. There are many kids on lower teams who are better individual players. Some show despite their teams and others may not. As the game itself gets better, the ability to dominate by athleticism alone starts to end and the need for actual (skilled) soccer players increase. So being on a "top" team doesn't mean that your kid is a "top" player. I know a girl from a D3 team that was offered a spot on a ECNL team a year ago. She turned it down because her dad told her if she went she would then have to work hard and she said she really just wanted to have fun playing soccer. So great for all those trying out and yes it is a tryout. Hope the girls give it their best and ignore the people trying to scare away the competition. If your DD feels like she wants to be a top level player take her out to ECNL tryouts. Solca at least is a fair person and a good judge of talent. She either makes the team or knows what she needs to work on and compete against. A true player cannot be afraid of "NO"
I will say for all of the internet confidence about solar ECNL tryouts, I sure did see alot of nervous parent faces. You could feel the tension in the building last night. It was hilarious

Completely agree. The players are the product. But the Magic Gel/Rank/team accomplishments (WINS) are the irrefutable truth. Coaches, at every level, are looking for the best products (players) to attain Wins. Nothing else matters. (Why else would 50+ college coaches show up to an ECNL showcase event this past weekend. I believe that in order to maximize their valuable time, the coaches started by watching the best teams which have the best coaches which in turn have the best players.) There are two ways to improve your team, by attaining new talent and by training a team. The best clubs/teams/coaches do both.

Re: Landscape changes with ECNL?
At some point some of these dominating players now will have the gap closed on them. Some will leave for other sports or just drop out all together due to burn out. Then when high school rolls around and a decent amount of the athleticism equals out, then those kids who have done the work all along, and have the biggest hearts, and skill, well...they will have their day in the sun.
Back in my day, I went to JJ Pearce, and it was a Richardson athletic policy that if you were not good enough in Jr. High, they cut you. Strangely Plano did not. Yes in Plano you may have rode the bench or been JV, but they always gave the chance for a player to finally "wake-up" in 10th or 11th grade and earn that starting spot. That never happened in Richardson unfortunately. Of course, when did a Richardson school ever win a state title...in football anyway?
As for us Pearce kids? We had a killer band and a great mascot, but that was about it. Go Mustang Band!

I am really glad to see the tone of this thread changed. I honestly was amazed at some of the posts almost mocking weaker players/parents from attending “OPEN” try-outs. I have to wonder what message these parents/grandparents are sending the kids?
Are we so protective of our kids that we only let them try out for things we know they can make? Should we try to limit the goals/dreams of our kids because they may not achieve them?
My daughter knows she has an uphill battle to make an ECNL roster, but she wants to give it her best shot just the same.
As my daughter told me before she started ECNL try-outs Dad I know it's a long shot but I really want to to make ECNL. She said worst case they tell me NO, but I still had a chance to get better competing against the best players and best case I make it, so what do I have to lose. I have to say that was a very proud moment for her mother and I and whether or not she makes it to ECNL she has already won in our book.
And I have to say I am starting to see a return on some of those $ I have been directing toward NTX soccer. I never expected a $ return in the way of scholarships etc. The return I am seeing is a tough minded daughter who isn’t afraid of tough competition who is hardworking and never gives up. Isn’t this what we want our kids learning, so why then are we surprised when a lot of players show up to an ECNL OPEN try-out

Great response!
Whether it's ECNL, College or eventually playing just playing for fun...this is what I'm seeing instilled in my daughter. You work hard and you get results. Everything else will take care of itself.

I'm sure all coaches enjoy nice dinners. Get Real. We all would like to be the few that have our daughters be included in the top ECNL programs just like the parents of singers for American Idol or The Voice would like to be included in those programs. Your analogy is perfect! Wouldn't we all want this for our kids. I don't think that the same atmosphere exists at the noted lessor ECNL tryouts. The potential is not there.

This website tells the story; Top programs/coaches offer the most potential. Why wouldn't any of us want to have our daughters be part of these top programs. Food for thought: Based upon the rankings, wouldn't The Fever United Team be better served to (as an entire group) move to the D'Feeters or merge with the Texans to make a better team? I have to wonder if that call has happened. Hell, based upon the rankings, D'Feeters would love to have the entire Sting Brown team to propel it's self.

Can you offer a specific situation where a "bribe" has resulted in a player landing on a team where the player clearly had no chance to be on that team based upon merit? Winning is too important. But adding a player to fill a roster could happen. But why would a parent want to be on a team where their player only trains to sit the bench and possible not even dress for a game? Seems like a stretch.

I never suggested that AS did. Go back and read the thread. Someone else suggested it. But yes I have seen kids on the field playing because of contributions. Rather that be cash, drinks, dinners or moms putting in work. Now I don't claim to know if AS is of that character but it does happen.
