purpose of ranking

New here.  Simply curious, and no bad intent.  What is the purpose of the weekly FBR rankings?

So when looking for new team you can place your little Mia on the closest, bestest team...right???

I thought it was for the parents/coaches of the next lower age group to see where their team DOESNT rank. hehehe

The FBR provides us bored soccer parents something to banter about in all honesty.

BUT it also provides a historically accurate picture of a teams performance against teams of their own age group and where they would "rank".

It does not tell you who is actually developing players as opposed to recruiting players. It does not tell you who is coaching sound soccer as opposed to kick and chase to the fast kid up top. It does not tell you who will even be around come select.

Go and check the recent post in the 02 Forum. It backs up that FBR will over time fairly accurately predict where some teams are headed.

Don't question the rankings please. I am in the process of having bumper stickers made that state, "My kid is on a #1 FBR ranked soccer team at the age of 3". That'll show them honor roll kid parents. If you start questioning this, my million dollar idea my die. Thanks for your consideration.

FBR has been used to help tournaments place teams as well. It is not always effective, especially when there is not enough data. How much data is enough? Some could argue that the Fall season was enough for the 06 group. Some would argue that it certainly was not enough data. I am sure some 06 teams that played AFC could argue there wasn't enough data, or maybe there were reasons for playing up or down from a more appropriate division (Rush? LP Dalglish? Triumph? AYSES? GSSC Thunder? ...).

FBR is forum fodder. It's just silly to use it for anything else.

FBR is a mathematical formula, based solely on game results. It gives a reasonably accurate assessment of the relative "strength" of teams.

As Borussia said, it gives you absolutely ZERO insight into style or quality of play, it merely gives you an idea of which team would be expected to win when two teams play each other, based off of recent historical results.

It has 2 main purposes:

1) Entertainment - in the form of watching people on the forum get all worked up over where their favorite (or least favorite) team is ranked.

2) It provides a general guide that coaches/managers/league directors/tournament directors can use to seek out/set up league divisions and tournament brackets that will give an appropriate level of competition.

Turns out that it also has a pretty good track record of predicting which teams will end up qualifying to play in LHGCL at U11 (~85% accuracy over the past 3 years).

Other than that, it's meaningless. There is no reward (other than water cooler and forum bragging rights) for ranking higher than another team, and FBR has no official capacity of any means.

The sole purpose of the FBR rankings were a responce to my original "The Logical Rankings" which are the only rankings ever to make any sense.

It is for the parents to live vicariously through their kids, mentioning to anyone who will listen that their 8 yr old DD is on the #1 ranked team in NTX & will be accepting her full ride to UNC shortly.

I'm also fairly new to this scene. Are all of the age groups in NTX as strong as the 06' girls?

The 06 age group is not that deep, YET. Its getting there.

06's have a long way to go before you can to begin make those predictions.
