Agreed. It's like watching U9 soccer all over again. Get the ball to the VV I-Talians. All that drinking is making people pissed at KW because her team is just bullying everyone to kickball it up the field and out of play.

what's wrong with long ball? It's great for defenders.. They get a ton of action, get to chase speedy gonzalez, and stay fit. The forwards get to work on 1 v 1 and where to place their shot... All greatness. I think the haters of long ball have DDs that play mid field and are jelly cuz all they get to do is watch. The mids are ball hogs anyway that don't have the killer instinct or arrogance of a forward or the physical mindset and 1v1 skill of a defender.. All the mids do is dance with the ball until they give it away anyway. So I say.. Long live Long Ball!

This is one of the many reasons why US Soccer lags behind the rest of the world

Right. USSF is trying to steer the game away from:
1. Dump and chase
2. Overly physical play
3. Joystick coaching

In other words, what we all just witnessed the past 2 weeks.

All I know is I saw a lot of possession and long ball at gold cup. Mexico, Costa Rica, and Jam-a-mak-a-me-crazy were all launching the ball from the back against the US.. When you can't break thru the midfield u gotta do something. I personally like Marine style of soccer.. Improvise, adapt, overcome...

At the professional level, you're correct. Play to win.

At U10/U11, you couldn't be more wrong. Girls being taught to play kickball at the expense of learning to play out of the back will be passed up in the coming years by the girls who learn to possess the ball. There is no game our tournament at U10 that's important enough to win that justifies sacrificing the developing of the girls into well-rounded players. And don't tell me "we just played kickball at QT and now we'll start learning to possess the ball." It doesn't ever really work that way.

It takes 30 minutes to teach a 15 year old girl to play boomball. It takes years to teach a 15 year old girl to properly possess the ball and make good decisions in the face of high pressure.

agreed.. but if the team doesn't make D1 cuz the coach didn't adapt to the dynamics of the game and loses then (s)/he has to answer to the club and the parents. In many cases no QT for D1 or D3 and relegated to Primetime means team blows up cuz parents demand more and want their DD playing at highest level. Then coach gets fired and loses (s)/he $2mil (exaggerating but you get my point) a month. if this happens there is no development going on anywhere. As a coach you teach the girls how to make intelligent decisions at the fast speed possible. If the situation dictates sending the ball cuz the defense is pressed, so be it.. Smart play.

and why is soccer so holier than though about playing technical all the dang time? Does football not have the "long bomb? does baseball not have the home run (ironically called the long ball)? Does Basketball not have "The 3"? Get serious people... Why are the long balls in these sports celebrated but pooped upon in soccer?

If you call it a through ball rather than long ball and keep it on the ground, all's good.

I really don't think there is anything wrong with a long ball. However if that is the sole way to advance the ball down the field, then there seems to be a severe hole in the development of the girls and their soccer IQ. I agree that playing a through ball or long ball can accomplish a great many things, but mainly it accomplishes job security for a great many coaches at the academy level. Only place it has at the competitive level is to keep the opposing team honest. Just my opinion.

Yeah, besides if you remove the long ball or direct play...then you'd remove one of the most clearly understood sideline directives us parents have in our shouting arsenal. #SendIt!

I mean really. "Handball", who can really tell? "Offsides ref", again, sometimes that's super hard to tell. I guess we still have "Cmon Ref, you blind?" and Fooooouuuuullllll! I've given up on shouting "Yellow/Red Card" as refs in North Texas don't carry them ;-)

I forgot to add, coaches really love it when we yell "SendIt". They know we are being super supportive of their coaching style and desire to win.
