LAKE HIGHLANDS GIRLS CLASSIC LEAGUE 2014 QUALIFYING TOURNAMENT PLAYING FORMAT FOR UNDER 11 (04’s)
52 Teams trying out for 30 spots: 20 Division I, and 10 Division III
ROUND 1: (78 games)
Teams will be seeded into 13 Brackets of 4.
Teams in all Brackets will play all other teams within their bracket.
After Round 1, the 13 Bracket winners and the next 7 teams with the highest point totals will qualify for Lake Highlands Girls Classic League in Division I.
ROUND 2: (48 games)
All other teams will advance to Round 2.
The Round 2 teams will be seeded into 8 Brackets of 4.
After Round 2 play, the 8 bracket winners and the next 2 teams with the highest point totals will qualify for Lake Highlands Girls Classic League in Division IIII.
* To the extent possible, Round 2 Brackets will be adjusted after Round 1 to make certain that teams from the same Round 1 Brackets do not play each other in Round 2. Therefore, teams may not actually play in the Brackets as shown above. All bracket adjustments will be done at the discretion of LHGCL.

Re: 04 QT Seeding and Schedule
If you are going to do it this way, why not just limit the pool size to 50, play 4 games in 10 brackets and have D2 the first year. Group winners go to D1, Second place to D2, Third to D3, 4th and 5th to PPL. Then you have it all done in one weekend. But...there is no adjustment for errant seeding...which is why the reseed before establishing the lower 7 in D1 was valuable.
BUT....what makes me a little MORE upset about the QT rules is that goal differential and goals scored are so heavily weighted over goals allowed in the tie-breakers. Why? Because it goes to 8 goals per game...which I think is wrong.
Most coaches like to take their foot off the gas when they play an opponent they can blow out for two reasons. One is to get bench players minutes (development), and the other is out of pure sportsmanship instead of just destroying an opponent. The 8 goal consideration here encourages coaches to run up the score and obliterate teams. Check that...it doesn't encourage them to do it...it REQUIRES them to be unsportsmanlike. Make it a 3 goal max like other tournaments when determining tie-breakers.

I can't decide how I feel about the new format. I think I liked the old format better where you had to win your bracket to make it into D1...either on the 1st or 2nd weekend. Seems to me that there would be no way for any team to complain about anything...win your bracket and your in. With the new format, there are going to be 6 teams that finish 2nd in their bracket and don't advance because of points...some of which I'm sure will be based on a tie-breaker situation.

Re: 04 QT Seeding and Schedule
I honestly don't know which way is better, Cosmos 03 is a team that ended up finishing 8th or 9th in DI their first year and under the current format would have been left out playing in DIII. On the other hand, who knows how some of these teams that missed out on the old format would have done in DI.
From looking at last years results, if you can get to 20 points you are probably pretty safe to advance, also if you are seeded 2nd in G through M it seems like you had a better chance of advancing. One year of results though makes it hard to make any real predictions. Just make sure you are racking up more than 8 points (not goals, although that would help) per win and you will be fine.
Should be fun to watch this weekend, especially if play is what it's like historically where teams pack it in and hope to catch the other team out of position on a long ball counter. I could see a top 10 seed get caught on the outside looking in because of this new format.

Re: 04 QT Seeding and Schedule
When we want to know why the rest of the world laughs at us, it isn't because what we do on the field, it's the constant reinventing of rules and formats that have been around forever.
With this format the final 7 teams that qualify will not be decided on the field amongst those teams, they will be decided by some random seeding number thrown at them and the teams they are lucky or unlucky enough to get grouped with. The only way to properly qualify the last 7 is on the field.
Secondly, the stupid 10 point system is a sham. Let's see, we will give you a point for each goal up to three, but the tiebreaker will use GD and GF up to 8...WHAT? They are inviting it upon themselves if things get ugly. I guess if you are 14,15,16 on your roster, you might get some valuable time when your team is up 8-0. Ridiculous.
As a poster said above, cap at 50 teams, group winners are through and group runners up play it out for remaining spots.

Re: 04 QT Seeding and Schedule
How many parents are going to get upset at their opponent for "being a jerk and running up the score"? Most don't even understand offside and go ballistic. Will there be fights on the sideline?
Or worse yet, what are we teaching the "winning" kids...."sweep the leg?", "no mercy?", or "kick them when they are down?"

Good luck to all the teams tomorrow and the girls this weekend. Hopefully, this will be a great start in all of our DD's soccer journey.
P.S. Keep it classy during the games this weekend.

I would not wager on that. There will be more than a few moron parents out there being obnoxious this weekend stressing over each pass.

Maybe we could get an audio/video contest going:
(1) Most obnoxious parent during a game
(2) Coach humiliating or berating 10 year old girls (maybe 2 categories here - during the game and after)
(3) Parent "advice" or game breakdown in the parking lot.
